Block Drawing

October 18, 2006
Sharpie Marker on Linoleum
10"x8"

This drawing became so complicated that I decided to use linoleum instead of cheery wood. This will still take a long time to carve but using a hardwood would have taken much, much longer. I plan to post sporadic scans of the carving in process and hope to have it finished in 2-3 weeks and then pull some proofs and then create a color block for the edition.

Kingdom Walkabout Map

September 29, 2006

Watercolor and Pencil

8"x11"

The week of September 25th I went on my practicum project walkabout across route 2 in northern New England. As I prepped myself the week before I wanted to bring a map along and decided to make my own. I did the drawing the week before and colored it and filled in the details as I went. It was fun to make and utilized my D&D mapmaking skills to great effect. You can click on the image to see a larger view.

Tunk Mountain

September 7, 2006

Monotype

5"x7"

Compositionally this could be better and the clouds flatten out a bit much for my taste but there is something happening in the mountains that I like.

Starry Night (ghost)

monotype
5"x7"

I reworked the plate from the original print but there was some squidging and splotching of the excess ink. The sky is nice but I don't care for the rest.

Starry Night

5"x7"

Monotype

The title for this one is cliche but it just seemed right and much better than what I titled the drawing this image is taken from, "Have you seen the stars tonight?"

Quabbin Dream

September 7, 2006

Monotype

4.5"x3.75"

I taught another Intro to the SPA Press in Barre this past weekend and used this image as a quick demonstration for my students. There must be 4 or 5 of these now and I have been thinking about framing them a s a group. It is a shame that I got an oily finger print on the plate but it made an interesting mark.

Harvest Moon

September 6, 2006
5.5"x6.5"
Charcoal Pencil

It was a beautiful harvest moon the other night and I had the good fortune to be out sketching.

There is something about this drawing that made me think about painting again. Perhaps I will pick up my brushes again in the near future.

Have you seen the stars tonight*

September 28, 2006
Charcoal Pencil
5"x5.75"

I did this sketch late one evening after I put out my campfire at the Moosebrook State Park outside of Gorham, NH. The drawing was worked on after the fact but I am pleased as catching the glow of early nighttime is difficult at best.

*The title is borrowed from a 1970 song by Paul Kantner and the Jefferson Starship from the Blows Against the Empire album.

Little Stone Wall

September 26, 2006

Charcoal pencil

4.5"x6"

Sunlight shines through the fall colors, warming my aching bones, as I sketch the big view.

Rustic Haven

September 26, 2006

Charcoal Pencil

6.25"x7.25

Out behind the campground where I stayed was this old high cow field with this wonderful view of the Vermont mountains. The morning air was filled with moisture, the fall colors muted through the mist that was all around me.

Fall Glow

Semptember 25, 2006

Watercolor and Pencil

6.5"x4.75"

There is a glow to the land when you are staring at the sun.

Golden greens and yellows.

More than just fall colors fill my soul with a hush.

East St. Johnsbury

Charcoal pencil

A quick sketch in East St. Johnsbury. The sun is breaking through the clouds casting deep shadows on this tree behind a church.
