Machias Block

Cherry Woodblock

3.25"x5.25"

Here is my current carving project at the half-way point. When I got to this point last Friday I decided to take a break from carving this weekend and scan the block. The color difference from the carved wood made it really beautiful to look at. With a little luck I will have it finished in about a week and some proofs pulled for the color block!

East Hardwick

January 17, 2007
Chiaroscuro Print
10"x8"
Finally, I pulled a small edition of sixteen prints off of two linoleum blocks. The final product came out really well considering the complicated nature of the two blocks.
There is almost a vortex of energy swirling about the composition that seems to be centered around a point in the clouds above the main tree. As if it is the center of some storm that is about to break at any moment.

Starry Night

Copy, collage, and Permanent Marker

5.5"x6.75"

This is a cartoon for a woodblock print that I am in the process of working on. I printing the scan and then expanded the drawing to the left by about a quarter of an inch. Then I worked on it extensively with a sharpie and am now in the process of cleaning the drawing in photoshop.

Snow Day

January 14, 2007

Charcoal Pencil

5.5" x 6.75"

This drawing is basically the same view of a drawing I did of the full moon last winter. I just transferred the old drawing to a canvas and decided to look at the original scene more closely during the day.

It was a beautiful day

With a gentle snow falling

The sound of the rushing river

Was the only thing I could hear.

Permanent Marker on Cherry Woodblock

3.25" x 5.25"

Until I enrolled at Goddard I did not keep a record of things like this. How the final drawing looked on the block with the woodgrain from the cherry block showing. There is a real beauty to all of the phases of my process and I am fortunate to be keeping such a thorough record.

Chiaroscuro Print

10" x 8"

Well here it is, I finally finished the color block and pulled three proofs of this print and I could not be happier. Last night I made some extensive corrections to the color block and prepared my studio to pull an edition of at least 25 prints. I think I will darken the color value just a little bit, but it is working pretty well as is. We shall see.

Look two postings below to see the difference that the B&W key block makes when pulled over the color block.

Artist Trading Card

January 9, 2006

Mezzotint

2" x 1.75"

This tiny little print is old, I pulled an edition of 45 in 2001. An artist at the upcuming residency is holding an ATC trading session and I took five of the prints and cut them down to trading card size. It will be intersting to see what I recieve in trade!

Color Proof

January 7, 2006
Linoleum Block Print
10"x8"

After months of carving, the color and key blocks are done for this edition of prints. I'll pull the key block over the three color proofs and see what corrections if any I need to make. Then my plan is to pull an edition of 25, hopefully starting the color run this coming weekend.

Morning Moon

January 4, 2006
Digital Photograph

As a habit I don't normally use photographs as material for drawings but this morning I saw the setting moon with these pink clouds as I scraped ice off of my car. It was really beautiful and I ran back into the house while my car warmed up to grab the camera.

Full Moon Sketch

December 29, 2006
Pencil on Canvas
16"x20"

This sketch will serve as the underpainting for the first canvas in a series of oil paintings of the full moon. I reorganized my studio last week and immediately spent a n hour of so working on this drawing.
