Linoleum Block Print

3.25"x5.25"

Here is a color proof for the Little Machias chiaroscuro print. I'll pull the key block over it later this week and then make some additional corrections as needed.

Little Machias Cartoon

Blockprint and Hi-Lighter

3.25"x5.25"

This is the cartoon for the color block. There will be some changes while carving this block as I plan to add some details into the land masses with a v-gouge that I could imagine in my mind but it did not translate easily to the cartoon. I am planning on using an indigo/mauve tone for the color and will not use the green shown here. I just grabbed what was in the pen jar at home and dived right in this past weekend.

Oil Stick on Canvas

16"x20"

I started the under painting for this canvas last Friday night after I put the kids to sleep for the night. It went very well and after a week of dry-time I will work into it again with the black and white oil stick before working into it with color.

Monoprint

7"x5"

At the last MFAIA residency I ran a brief workshop with my advising group. I brought in my small Holbein press and eight of us worked on these prints as a group. I inked up the first few plates and passed them around. Each person then manipulated the ink and passed it around the table. After awhile I introduced color and let others roll the ink on the plate. The prints are rather fascinating and I enjoyed pulling them for the group. The experience went so well that I am thinking about running a workshop like this for the summer residency and may even offer it as a class at the local arts center here in Vermont. I would appreciate any comments on the work.

Copy, white-out and permanent marker

5.5"x6.5"

This cartoon for a block print is pretty complicated and is a sort of homage to 19th century wood engravers, which I am not. The lines and marks will be abstracted slightly further once this drawing is transfered to a piece of cherry wood. I have a deep blue color in mind for the color block with little bits of white from the paper coming through and highlighting parts of the design. This will be my seventh and final chiaroscuro print for my time in Goddard's MFAIA program.

Little Machias Proof

February 1, 2007

Blockprint

3.25"x5.25"

Pulled a few proofs last night and can't wait to start the color block. This print is small and simple yet there is something about it that is starting to work really well. I think it is that this is a very special place that I visit with my family on a regular basis, that and it just feels right.

Cherry Woodblock

3.25"x5.25"

I finished this carving project in record time!

Tonight I will print a few proofs and do any additional carving before I start to plan the color block.
