Color Proof (yellow)

January 21, 2008

8"x10"

Chiaroscuro print

This is the color that I plan to pull a small edition of, perhaps 15-25 prints. I added a little Yellow Ochre and some Naples Yellow to the gray mixture that I started with. This color reflects the time of year that I made the original sketch, in the spring. There were no leaves on the trees but the bright sun cast a yellow haze over the entire scene that added to the surreal quality of the factory. There is something odd about factories like this as they tend to be smack dab in the middle of the most scenic parts of the country. Without this factory complex this little portion of nature would be spectacular, but it has been replaced by our constant need for paper, fuel and plastic.

Chiaroscuro print

There are several little "fixes" that need to be made to the color block before I pull a full edition of the print. Besides some very minor changes the registration of the two plates worked as well as I could have hoped for.

8"x10"

Chiaroscuro print

This was actually the first of the color prints to be pulled. I mixed up a good sized batch of gray ink and printed two copies. Then I separated the ink into three different groups and added a little bit of color to each.

Chiaroscuro print

This is the first of four different color schemes that I printed for the North Country Factory print. I could have made it a little more on the green side.

Monotype

This is a nice little print from a drawing I made at camp in Maine this fall.

2-Plate Monotype

5"x7"

This one is a lot more succesful than the first as I added some white to both colors and it helped. In the future I need to add more white to create a contrast between the color and the B&W plate. It is hard to see in this scan but there are still some machine lines running up the vertical of the plate that I hope buff out in the near future.

2-Plate Monotype

5"x7"

Held a little class at Whitewater Gallery in East Hardwick and pulled a couple of prints. This is one of two that I pulled with two plates and I have started to work out some of the kinks in the process. I plan to purchase some 5"x7" plexi plates for the color in the future. This will make matching the color plate with the B&W plate a lot easier.

Factory Proof 2 (color)

January 6, 2008

Copy and Blue Hi-Lighter

8"x10"

This is the second version I made with a hi-lighter on a printed copy of the proof. The first one had the hills behind the factory solid and I did not like the way it looked. It helped be to get the drawing this far and hopefully I will have the color block carved quickly, in the next two weeks.

Linoleum Block Print

8"x10"

After months of procrastination I have finally finished carving this block. I have carved a little bit after this proof was pulled and the color block is well under way.

Cold River

Charcoal Pencil
6.75"x8.75"
Went out for a snowshoe the other day on the opposite side of the river near my house. The sky was pale blue with thin clouds that stretched across the sky like taffy. Cold air made the snow crunchy under my snowshoes as I searched for a view. The river rushed by with a gentle roar as it cut through the deep snow like a knife. The only other thing moving was my pencil, scratching away in the cold.
