Carborundum Proof

April 28, 2013

Carborundum Proof

8"x4 5/8"

I attempted a different method of applying the 2nd color to this carborundum plate and think this may be the right process with these prints. The plate got a little over-wiped and I am not happy with the cobalt blue but all in all it was a successful experiment. Have a date at SPA in Barre to print on the big press this Thursday and hope to print all three of the plates for this triptych and a few others!

Carborundum Proof

Carborundum proof on plexi
5"x7"

The proof I pulled on April 6th has better color than this and I need to make sure the 2nd color is much lighter than what I used for these two proofs yesterday.  Think I will experiment with a new technique of inking the plate this weekend.  I feel I am almost ready to book some time at SPA in Barre to try and print these two plates together and the triptych plates as well.

I am still having some issues with printing and need to rethink how I am inking the second color.  As it is, I am rolling the color across the plate and think I will try daubing the color on next week and wiping it ever so slightly.

Carborundum Cartoon (Montpelier II)

April 6, 2013
Copy, collage, white-out and pen
8"x10"

This is the second of two sketches of Montpelier that I have worked on recently to use for a Carborundum print.  I am unsure if there is enough white space for this to work with the carborundum technique, but we will have to wait for the prints to be sure.

Two-Color Carborundum Proof

Carborundum Print with monotype
5"x7"

I pulled five prints over the weekend and am still having some difficulty with the inking and wiping of these Plexiglas plates.  This one was the only one of three with the monotype layer that was worth showing.  I think the pressure was a little too strong and it caused some ink to smear on one side and the other two shifted slightly more than this one while printing. I feel I have made some progress and hope to print these with a little more consistency next time.

This series of prints consists of two plates of the same drawing.  Hopefully I can pull both of them together as part of my Rorschach series in the near future.

Carborundum print
5"x7"

This is the last of the prints from this weekend.  I learned that I can wipe the heck out of these and there will almost always be enough ink in the carborundum grit to pull a print.  Before I was under-wiping and this led to a lot of inconsistency in the prints.
