Crystal Lake

August 11, 2013
Charcoal pencil on paper
3.25"x4.5"

Wind mills from the Crystal Lake State Park in Barton, VT. It was a beautiful day for a canoe ride, lunch and swimming at the lake.  Made this quick sketch on the spot and worked on it a little bit after we got home.

Little Machias II

Charcoal pencil on paper
3"x4.25"

This is perhaps the best of the seven drawings I made while on vacation in Maine.  It was a beautiful day to scramble along the rocks to find this spot.  The clouds seemed to mirror the shape of the landscape before me.

Sunshine on Little Machias
Solitude along the seashore
More rocks
More waves
Wind at my back
Pencil in hand.

Spent the day in and around Cutler, Maine with the family.  I am fortunate to have a home and camp to visit in Maine, especially the house on the ocean.  I could sketch in and around the shore in Little Machias Bay for the rest of my life and not get bored.

In the Water

August 3, 2013
Charcoal on paper
3.25"x4.25"

Our Maine vacation has been productive as I have made several drawings and have been enjoying my time at camp and in Cutler.  Walked along the shore on Narraguagus Lake and had to wander out into the water to sketch this view. Found a nice flat rock to stand on, but was up to my knees in the lake.  Could not have been a better place to be, standing in the sun making a sketch. Hope to post a few more drawings later this week!

Narraguagus

Fog and drizzle
Shift uneasily before me
Across Narraguagus
The sound of wind and waves
And the occasional loon
Are all before me.
